Dominic Cooper Takes You Behind The Scenes Of ‘Preacher’ In This Exclusive Video

According to our own Dustin Rowles, “If there is a God — and Preacher certainly suggests there is — this show is going to be huge.” That’s because the new AMC series by executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and showrunner Sam Catlin is very, very good. It successfully adapts the acclaimed late-’90s comic book series by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, and boasts “everything the internet loves in a show.” Much of this has to do with the cast, which includes Dominic Cooper as the titular Preacher, Jesse Custer; Ruth Negga as his ex-girlfriend Tulip O’Hare; and Joseph Gilgun as his Irish pal Cassidy. And in the exclusive behind-the-scenes clip from AMC above, we can see just how fantastic the chemistry is between these three performers in and around the Preacher set.

Although the show is set in Annville, Texas, shooting took place in New Mexico, which is where Cooper tours the exterior and interior sets of the All Saints Congregation. Cut together with shots from the pilot and b-roll footage, the video displays the recreated church on a back lot that was used for outdoor scenes, day and night. As for the inside of the church, Cooper previews the intricate staging and lighting techniques deployed by the crew to bring his congregation to life.

Yet the real magic ensues when Cooper and Negga, then Cooper and Gilgun, discuss the Preacher comics and their time on set. Negga admits that she was a huge, unrepentant fan of the Ennis and Dillon comics before she got the part of Tulip. Gilgun, however, “knew nothing” about the books before his agent called him asking if he wanted to play “an interesting character.” Cassidy is definitely that, but considering Gilgun and Cooper’s shenanigans in a cemetery set, it seems the most interesting bits of Cassidy come from the actor himself.

Preacher premieres Sunday, May 22 at 10 p.m. ET on AMC.
