The Latest ‘Resident Evil 7’ Trailer Is A Chilling Slice Of Old-School Survival Horror

After focusing more on straight action for a few entries, Capcom’s Resident Evil 7: Biohazard returns the series to its survival horror roots in a big way. Fans already got a little taste of the terror to come with the Resident Evil 7: Beginning Hour demo, but that was mostly a fairly straightforward mood piece, without a lot of the exploration and puzzle-solving the series was once known for. Just how old-school is the full Resident Evil 7 going to get?

Pretty old-school from the sound of things. In a new press release, Capcom promises the next Resident Evil will deliver a ton of atmosphere, exploration, and good old adventure game-style puzzles. The game will also feature a limited inventory you have to manage, and yes, the return of health-restoring green herbs. No word on whether you’ll have to use typewriter ribbons to save, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised.

Capcom has also released a new, very effectively creepy Resident Evil 7 trailer. It mostly focuses on foreboding atmosphere, as a mysterious female character tries to escape a sinister lantern-toting figure. According to Capcom’s press release, the lantern woman is Marguerite Baker, one of the co-owners of the run down Louisiana plantation house Resident Evil 7 takes place in and around. What does Marguerite want? Capcom won’t say, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say it’s nothing good.

Resident Evil 7 biohazard will make you scream on Jan. 24, 2017.
