A Brief Roundup Of All The Theories About Rey’s Origin In ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’

(Spoilers ahead.)

Ever since The Force Awakens was released a week and a half ago, fans just haven’t stopped coming up with theories about it. It seemed like that was kinda the point with a lot of the unanswered questions that the movie posed: J.J. and Disney want us to keep wondering and talking about it online until we find out that Snoke was the smoke monster the whole time. So let’s keep doing exactly that! There are plenty of ideas out there, like this one about Kylo Ren’s real intentions, but the one character that’s seen the most attention is Rey. She’s the one with the most mysterious past out of the new bunch, so let’s break down all the theories out there on her origin.

We got the latest theory a few days ago from film critic Mr. Sunday, saying that Rey is related to Obi-Wan. Evidence supporting this involve her proficiency of the Jedi mind trick and other similarities between the two including clothing choices, although all of those can be chalked up to Abrams following a similar format to A New Hope.

Another possibility is Rey being Luke’s daughter. This seemed obvious from Luke’s lightsaber calling out to Rey and giving her visions of whomever left her on Jakku. This theory hold a little more weight, especially after that final scene in the movie, but that could all just be a misdirection because it feels almost too easy.

Rey could also be Han and Leia’s other child, the sister to Kylo Ren. This would parallel the EU novels, where their son falls victim to the Dark Side and their daughter apprentices under Luke. Her being siblings with Ren would also follow the Luke-Leia relationship before them.

But why does she have to be related to anyone? It seems like that’ll be the case based on how many nods they made to her past in Episode VII, but why can’t she just be a Force-sensitive character not related to Anakin? Oh well, no one will know for sure until Episode VIII comes out to answer so many questions. 2017 seems like so far away.
