Ron Perlman’s Heart Really Isn’t Into ‘Hellboy 3,’ But He’ll Make The Sacrifice For Fans

Ron Perlman doesn’t know his own strength. Only a few months ago, he offhandedly asked the Internet for help in getting Hellboy 3 up and running. Then he backtracked a bit to say he wasn’t aware that “a little goof” of a tweet would resurrect the beast. Perlman won 20,000 new followers within a day, so he kept on cheerleading.

Perlman eventually revealed Guillermo del Toro’s plan for the film. The actor kept saying “mind-blowing” over and over again, and that simple descriptor riled up the masses even more. Perlman hinted that Hellboy would come into his legacy as the Beast of the Apocalypse, and he said the “mind-blowing” nature of the story made a sequel “non-negotiable. That’s why I think it would be a shame if we don’t do it.” Now he’s back with more feelings about Hellboy 3. While promoting Amazon’s Hand of God, he spoke with Collider about how he’s not too thrilled with the prospect of another movie. But he’ll do it for you:

“I really feel as though I’m done with the character. I don’t have a burning desire to put that sh*t on again. But Guillermo told me what the resolve of the trilogy would look like, in broad strokes, and it’s such an amazingly theatrical, cinematic idea, that I found it essential that we do it. We were designed to be a trilogy, with a beginning, a middle and an end. We’ve only done two-thirds, so I feel that we’re not really done until we finish it.”

The way Perlman puts it, he almost feels obligated to take up the character again, but it’s easy to see why he wouldn’t look forward to the process. The entire preparatory process for each day of shooting required Perlman to sit in a makeup chair for four hours. That alone is enough to dampen many actors’ desires, but it certainly wouldn’t stop Johnny Depp. Some actors enjoy hiding in costume, but Perlman may not be one of them.

Despite the newly unenthusiastic air of Perlman when considering Hellboy 3, it sounds like this final installment will eventually be made. The very heavens demand as much, and we need to know what becomes of Liz’s twins.
