Stan Lee Explained Why A ‘Daredevil’ TV Series Didn’t Happen Sooner

Marvel has been on one hell of a roll recently. Avengers: Age Of Ultron will be hitting theaters in the coming weeks, along with Ant Man later this summer. Then you have ABC working on a new spinoff series to Agents Of SHIELD as well as a super secret project that some are speculating to be a Ms. Marvel series. And then, of course, there’s Netflix’s widely popular Daredevil series.

Stan Lee recently attended a Gillette event to help promote a new Avengers themed line of razors, but he came with plenty of other goodies. According to the Toronto Sun, the 92-year-old revealed a previous failed attempt at bringing the Man Without Fear to the small screen:

I wanted to do that many years ago, but at the time the people who owned [Marvel] were very foolish. There was a beautiful actress who wanted to play Black Widow alongside Daredevil in the TV show…I came to the person who at the time was the CEO of Marvel and I said, ‘We have a chance to do this as a series,’ and this idiot said, ‘If it bombs, that’ll hurt the character.’ And I said, ‘If that was the case, we’d never do anything.’

The previous Daredevil project Lee might be referencing could be the attempt Angela Bowie made in getting the series to TV in 1975. David Bowie’s ex-wife acquired the rights to the character from Stan Lee back then and went ahead with promotional photos of herself as Black Widow and actor Ben Carruthers as Daredevil. You can look at the odd photos from that shoot here.

By the looks of things, and given the nature of television back then, it’s pretty safe to say the Daredevil who exists on Netflix currently is the best on screen iteration of the superhero thus-far. Now, if only we had information on a Season 2. Fess up, Netflix!
