J.J. Abrams Is Dropping Crumbs About Kylo Ren And The Dark Side

More often than not, J.J. Abrams keeps details regarding his upcoming films pretty secure. The old “Mystery Box” thing. Whether or not his willingness to share details about this December’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a result of his own softening of that stance, or just Disney telling him to keep quiet remains to be seen. What’s important here is that we’ve got more information on the bad guys of the film. Or, at least, the bad guys from a certain point of few…

Empire magazine has an interview with the director in their latest issue, and in it, Abrams drops some knowledge not only about the funky lightsaber-wielding Kylo Ren, but also about the First Order faction he’s allegedly aligned with. In terms of Ren’s full name and, more specifically, why he doesn’t carry the title of “Darth” (we already know this isn’t his real name), Abrams had a very simple answer: He’s not called Darth because he’s not a Sith.

According to Abrams, Ren actually works for Supreme Leader Snoke, who controls the First Order (as opposed to Supreme Leader Snopes, who debunks Internet rumors). Snoke, as Abrams tells the magazine, “is a powerful figure on the Dark Side of the Force.”

As far as the First Order themselves are concerned, Abrams reveals their inspiration came from a fairly familiar source:

“That all came out of conversations about what would have happened if the Nazis all went to Argentina but then started working together again?”

The full interview is in the issue of Empire coming out on Thursday. The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18.
