‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Is Already Raking In Cash At The Box Office

Officially, the Star Wars: The Force Awakens box office derby doesn’t start until tonight, when the movie hits screens for “early” showings. But it’s already out overseas… and already collecting some serious credits.

Star Wars officially opened in most of Europe yesterday, and it broke records pretty much everywhere it went. We won’t list all the accolades here because about half of them are more or less made up for advertising purposes, like “best opening for a Star Wars movie ever,” but it immediately hit number one in every market it opened in, and broke box office records in Norway and Sweden. Overall, it’s already grossed $14.1 million, just in one day.

That will likely be quickly dwarfed, however. Many speculate it will crack the $43 million record Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows set for a Thursday opening and might rack up more than $200 million this weekend just in the U.S. And the movie will be on pretty much every screen you can find by Christmas Day, so it’s likely going to be around, and pulling in box office numbers, for a while. The only question is whether it can take down Jurassic World‘s surprising figures. We’ll find out, starting tomorrow.
