“I am no Jedi, but I know the Force.” So says the thousand-plus year-old Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong’o) to Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Now details have emerged about a deleted scene which demonstrates just how much Kanata knows the Force. Mild spoilers, we suppose, because this might (and should) have bearing on the rest of the new trilogy.

J.J. Abrams recently spoke to EW about the ten to twenty minutes of deleted scenes from the film. In one of them, Maz Kanata personally delivers Luke and Anakin’s lightsaber to General Leia. Why (and how) would she have a lightsaber? Another deleted scene offers an intriguing development. Collider asked SFX Supervisor Chris Corbould if there were any deleted scenes in particular he was sad to see get cut, and he revealed a different, even cooler, Maz Kanata sequence:

There was a particular part of a scene that never made it, where they go underneath the castle and they’re going into the underground passageways, and stormtroopers are coming down the stairs and Maz uses her powers to collapse the ceiling.

From my point of view, [that] worked absolutely brilliantly because you had all the main actors running up and then Maz does her bit and then the whole ceiling collapses in front of them, but that never made it. That was a shot I was quite proud of, actually, it worked really, really well.

In other words, Kanata not only knows of the Force, she can apparently also use it to drop a ceiling on some fools. But she’s not a Jedi? Did she used to be a Jedi? Was the scene cut because they decided she won’t be able to use the Force after all? And how will this affect our Golden Girls / Star Wars crossover fan fiction?
