Superman’s Costume Proves You Don’t Mess With A Classic

Most people change their style regularly, and superheroes are no exception. In his first 20 years, Iron Man had eight different suits of armor, not including the dozens of custom suits Stark built for specific situations. But Superman isn’t most people.

The original look, with a body suit and trunks, would be instantly recognizable to anybody in 1938. Superman was wearing a strongman’s outfit, something so commonplace most superheroes imitated it because it was easy for even audiences hazy on what a superhero was to understand. As the years went by and Superman became more popular, the suit endured, even as tastes changed and strongman acts faded away in the pop culture landscape.

That said, there has been some evolution over the years. Superman’s added the occasional accessory, and in the comics, he’s worn all sorts of outfits, but only as necessary. Once he got the chance, he was back in the trunks. Of course, the details have changed a bit over the years, such as DC redefining his chest symbol to mean “hope.” But if Superman’s fashion sense sticks to the classics, his choice in hairstyles is a bit more fashionable, for better or worse. Although, let’s face it, who’s going to tell Superman that he can’t wear a mullet?
