Superman Will Fly Alongside ‘Supergirl’ For The Show’s Second Season On The CW

The move from big-three network CBS to Greg Berlanti’s DC Comics television empire on The CW isn’t the only big change Supergirl will face in its second season. Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) and the denizens of National City will also come face to face with Superman, a character often referred to but never seen — aside from blurry glimpses and simulated flashbacks in the episode “For The Girl Who Has Everything.” We know this because, according to an official statement released by executive producer Andrew Kreisberg, the production team behind Supergirl is currently on the lookout for an actor to play the role of Clark Kent.

“Greg, [Ali Adler] and I are beyond thrilled to welcome Clark Kent and his slightly-more-famous alter ego to the world of Supergirl,” wrote Kreisberg. “Superman will be appearing in the first two episodes of the new season and we cannot wait to see who next dons the red cape!”

After months of speculation following the first few episodes’ repeated mentions of the character, the Supergirl team revealed in November that Kal-El would finally make an appearance on the show. However, the Last Son of Krypton’s formal cameo wasn’t so much a look at his adult self on Kara’s earth, but a simulated teenage version due to a mid-season episode’s plot device. Because Kara was under the control of an alien parasite, she remained in a comatose state throughout — seeing herself alive with her family on Krypton, which hadn’t been destroyed at all.

Per Kreisberg’s statement, it seems Supergirl will now go one step further by casting the adult character for a two-episode arc at the beginning of the second season. Whether the appearance will figure into the first season’s pod cliffhanger, or the promised four-show crossover event, remains to be seen.
