The Black Eyed Peas Get Geeky With It

So I’m sitting here working on the blog with my iPod set to shuffle on the Hip Hop/Rap genre (not Hip-Hop/Rap, I guess that’s something else), when what sounds like a rock song about technology and wanting things now pops on. I had no idea what it was, so I walked over to discover it’s a song called “Now Generation” by The Black Eyed Peas from their most recent record The E.N.D. (yeah, I like the BEP, what’s it to you?). I hadn’t heard this song yet because this isn’t a very good record (too mellow for my tastes), but this song took me by surprise and not just because it sounds like an actual band is playing it.

I think it’s common knowledge by now that the Peas were just a trio of hip hop nerds before Fergie joined and they blew up. Well, apparently this song (sung by Fergie and Will i Am) is trying to get back to the geekery as is the live perfomance in the video above. You’ve got Fergie’s weird Regan-from-The Exorcist-spiderwalk posing and the giant Gort-like inflatable robots bearing the groups name in the video above. Here’s a few verses from the song:

“I want money

I want it want it want it

Fast internet

Stay connected in a jet

Wi-fi, podcast

Blasting out an SMS

Text me and I text you back

Check me on the iChat

I’m all about that http

You’re a PC I’m a Mac

I want it..”

There’s also this:

“Myspace in your space

Facebook is a new place

Dip divin’ socializin’

I’ll be out in cyber space

Google is my professor

Wikipedia checker

Checkin my account

Loggin in and loggin out

Baby I want it..

Now!”

You’ll have to judge for yourself whether this is cool or lame, I’m leaning towards lame (“I’m all about that http”? What does that even mean). Also, calling it “the iChat” makes it sound like a grandma is singing about the internet. What happened to the verse about Friendster and Xanga?
