‘Infinity’ #1: The Comic You Should Be Reading This Week

Jonathan Hickman gets his claws into the entire Marvel Universe this week. A full review, plus looks at books from DC, Image, Boom!, Titan, IDW, and Valiant under the cut.

Hickman is popular on here for his run on the Avengers books, but if I’m being honest, I never got into them. Not for lack of quality, certainly, there was just something about them that didn’t click with me. This, however, clicks.

Hickman is an incredibly talented, and very busy, writer of thrillers, and this has all the cinematic feel and building menace of his best work. The Avengers are facing a massive, galaxy-spanning threat, so they’re off-world. Guess who sees now as the perfect time to pick a fight with the Inhumans?

This really has everything you want out of an event: The plot is tightly focused, the cast is huge but all has room, and of course, it’s a lot of fun, ending on a great cliffhanger. It’s superhero comics at its best, and well worth picking up.

So that should be in your sub folder. What else should you be picking up today?

Mike Kunkel delivers a surprisingly melancholy look at childhood. It’s a book aimed at kids, but it’s a smart, relatable piece of work, and Kunkel’s spare coloring over his cartooning work and amusing comic-strip writing style give this book a lot of charm. It’s a good book for kids, or adults who remember a little too well what being a kid was really like.

I know, I know, it’s a Dynamite book and it’s got a T&A pin-up cover starring a character mostly known for her skimpy swimsuit. But Nate Cosby actually delivers a solid horror-action script that doesn’t get hung up on the details and Jose Luis, while perhaps not breaking any new ground, offers clean artwork that doesn’t get in the way of the story. It’s not revolutionary, but it’s a lot more fun than I was expecting.

Thunder-2

Phil Hester and Andrea Di Vito take yet another crack at reviving the ’60s comic series, notable for treating heroes not as driven vigilantes but guys with jobs and for some really great art. Honestly, Hester and Di Vito aren’t entirely sure where to take this series just yet, so it comes off as fairly generic superheroics. But considering no fewer than eight publishers have taken a shot at the team over the years, it’s to be expected. Worth reading if you’re into books for heroes.

24498

Brian Reed and Marco Castiello do a solid job with this comic, but the Halo universe seems a bit limiting to these two. Yes, Reed worked on Halo 4 but he’s also a comics pro, and neither he nor Castiello really get to unload. Still, it’s a fun action book, and fans of the games won’t have to think twice.

20619

Peter Hogan writes and Steve Parkhouse illustrates a pretty engaging story about an alien blending into small-town America. Hogan has a lot of fun with the fish-out-of-water concept, incorporating dreams and flashbacks into the plot, while Parkhouse has a lot of fun inserting a weird alien into fairly mundane surroundings. It’s a book with a lot of cliffhangers that make you want to read the next issue… good thing, too, as this was collected in Dark Horse Presents, and will be getting a three-issue mini. Definitely well worth checking out.

chronos-commandos-dawn-patrol-2

One of two Nazis-and-dinosaurs books on the stands this week, Stuart Jennett definitely wins in the art stakes, but the whole “two-fisted tale” thing feels a bit tired. Jennett’s characters are cliches down to the last Ratzi, but at least the book itself is gorgeous, like a series of painted pulp covers. Worth picking up if you just want to stare at the art, but beyond that, really only for pulp fans.

ASTRO_Cv3_6ikybld4uj_

This title was so, so, sorely missed. This issue wraps up a two-part arc from Kurt Busiek and Brent Anderson that’s among one of the best in the series’ run, a quiet story about making mistakes, and how showing how you handle your mistakes is just as important as trying not to make them. Alternately thrilling, sweet, and sad, it’s a story about, in the end, heroism. And that’s all too rare in comics these days. Highly recommended.

22774

Steve Niles and Dave Wachter wrap up their surprisingly quiet look at a classic story. Really, the ending of this book isn’t in doubt, but what makes it work is Niles’ melancholy writing combined with Wachter’s restrained black and white art. This is the only book where a Nazi getting blown to pieces with his own grenade isn’t played up as a festival of splat. Highly recommended, and some of Niles’ best work.

A1-3-ODYSSEY

Titan’s anthology book continues to be a bit hit or miss, but the Carpe Diem story is worth reading just for the sheer goofiness as it parodies anti-video-game crusades and the reasons behind them. It’s worth picking up just for that laugh alone, and the other two stories are solid, if nothing special.

STK615369

Stephen Mooney continues to throw, well, damn near everything into the mix. This is a book set during World War II, featuring dinosaurs, with a ninja as one of the main characters. Mooney’s art is better than his script, but if you’re a fan of the pulps, it’s hard to knock this.

STK615357

This mini finishes its seeming goal, which is to cram every single postapocalyptic cliche into a single miniseries. One wonders what John Byrne has coming for Doomsday.2.

X2-4-FC-FNL

This book wraps up its first arc by introducing, finally, some mystery to the whole thing, something sorely missing from the book. X is not who he was supposed to be, and just who he actually is is a mystery. It’s a little late to save this particular arc, but it might make the book worth looking at going forward.

djangocv6jpg-88262c_640w

Django Unchained‘s biggest selling point is contrasting Reginald Hudlin’s adaptation against the movie, and enjoying the art from Denys Cowan and John Floyd. See the movie first, but after that, pick this up.

STK615365

Chuck Dixon is writing a G.I. Joe book, and the results are pretty much exactly as you’d expect. Will Rosado’s art is a bit generic and heavy on the inks, but he’s often called on to make the ridiculous realistic, and he makes it work. Worth a look if you’re a fan of the franchise, or Dixon.

JLA_CV7_ds--415x615

Trinity War continues and it’s fun, but it doesn’t quite have the snap or the scale that one wants out of a story like this. On the other hand, it’s still pretty promising, and it looks like the back half of this story is leading to a blowout. Recommended.

AA_012_COVER_LUPACCHINO

Every time you think Fred Van Lente can’t get crazier, he does. This is one of three books with the same basic conceit on the shelves this week, namely time-craziness, but Van Lente’s comedy chops make this, by far, the best. Pere Perez shows considerable skill as well, keeping the book looking like a superhero comic while pulling some very, very funny moments out of the characters.

HAR_015_VARIANT_EVANS

This new arc kicks off with a bang, showing Joshua Dysart’s ability to give the members of this team genuine emotional depth, before taking that to a really, really dark place. Barry Kitson actually has the most fun here, though, showing off what happens when a bunch of superpowered teenagers go on vacation. If you haven’t been following this book, now’s the time to pick it up.

BM_Cv23_q4si145qfy_

Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo pull off what has to be the hardest trick in any Batman origin; having Batman realize he should become a guy dressed like flying insect-munchers instead of a ninja. And it does it with aplomb and some absolutely gorgeous art; even if you’re coming into the middle of the book, grab this issue just for Snyder and Capullo making a story their own. Highly recommended.

Green_Lantern_Corps_Vol_3-23_Cover-1_Teaser

Van Jensen and Robert Venditti are having some fun with the Green Lantern universe, and Bernard Chang’s art is rock solid; Lantern books are excuses for artists to uncork their imaginations and Chang is more than up to the challenge. Still, more for fans than for casual readers; recommended for fans.

IDW15

This comic feels a lot like a classic Star Trek episode, for more reasons than just the ultimate finale. Mike Johnson is doing a great job capturing what makes the classic series great using the new crew, and often this book is better than the reboots it’s theoretically based off of. If you’re a Trek fan, highly recommended.

Star Wars #8: We’ve raved about this book before, and it’s always a delight. Recommended.

Deathmatch #8: Paul Jenkins and Carlos Magno ensure you’ll never look at superhero fights the same way again. A strong continuation of a great series.

Buffy: Season Nine #24: Sadly, this continues to be more for fans than anyone else.

The X-Files #3: This isn’t the best X-Files story ever written, but it’s beginning to feel more like the show, and that makes it a fun piece of nostalgia.

The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys #3: Gerard Way’s book remains an odd, but likeable, SF series. Worth reading, if you liked Umbrella Academy.

Six-Gun Gorilla #3: This book just keeps getting weirder and better. A must buy.

Great Pacific #9: A strong series delivers one of its best issues yet.
