The Third Riddick Film Ain’t Dead Yet

It was almost two years ago that we reported Vin Diesel and writer/director David Twohy were trying to make a sequel to Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick. This third film was finally shooting in Montreal last month when production abruptly ceased due to the cast and crew being locked out of the studio after running out of money. Now /film reports they’ve paid those bills and raised more money (somehow), and production is scheduled to resume on December 28th. The film stars Vin Diesel and may also star Karl Urban, Katee Sackhoff, and Bokeem Woodbine.

This third film ignores the ending of the second movie, in which — Should I warn about spoilers as if anybody cares? — Vin Diesel is declared the king of the Necromongers or the Sneetches on Beaches or whatever and then they aim their ship towards the “Underverse” which I was hoping was code for “the center of the freaking Sun”. Instead of carrying on that plot line, the synopsis for the third film is much closer in tone (and lower budget) to Pitch Black. Riddick gets betrayed and left for dead on a planet where he has to fight aliens, then outwit bounty hunters, then save his home planet of Furya. Plus everyone gets ice cream and a pony. Yay.
