Of all the animal-themed cartoons we got back in the 80’s and 90’s (Silverhawks, Tiger Sharks, Battlefrogs…man, animation studios sure had an animal fetish back then), the best remembered is Thundercats, which spawned both an impressively collectible toy line and a fairly epic storyline featuring the natural hatred between lions and mummies. It’s also the least exploited of the major 80’s toy properties, possibly because no one was entirely sure who had the rights after several failed attempts at movies over the last couple years.
Well, it’s finally getting its revival. ToyFare Magazine has broke the news that there’ll be a new Thundercats cartoon for Cartoon Network from Warner Brothers Animation, the studio behind Batman: Brave and the Bold. It’s actually going to be a collaboration between WBA and Studio4°C, the studio behind The Animatrix, Gotham Knights and Halo Legends.
From the press release, Lion-O will be searching for the “stones of power,” something that wasn’t in the original cartoon. (Although between other Thundarians and the Treasure of Thundera, Lion-O was always searching for something.) Here’s hoping we at least get some new Thundercats toys out of the deal.
