‘Tomb Raider’ Is Getting A Sequel, In Both Comic And Game Form

As we all know, Tomb Raider disappointed Square Enix by being critically beloved, well-designed, and selling well. But despite “only” selling four million copies, they’re apparently going to give it another chance. And also continue the story with Gail Simone at the wheel of a comic published by Dark Horse.

Yep, as part of Dark Horse’s surprisingly hard push into gaming comics this weekend, with a Halo ongoing and Plants Vs. Zombies joining their BioWare comics and their superb Last Of Us prequel, they’ve hired Gail Simone to follow up the game. And Simone ain’t changing much.

I chose to do this series solely because I loved the game so much, so we’re definitely keeping the tone of the game. I’ve always loved the classic, cool Lara Croft, but this feels like her origin story, like we’re seeing her before she becomes the icon, and it’s very compelling to me.

Simone also mentioned that this would tie into the sequel, and since she’s been working closely with the original game’s writers on this and Red Sonja, the cat seems to be out of THAT bag. And it’s not a surprise: The reboot was, despite Square Enix’s bizarre expectations, the top selling entry in the entire franchise and one of its most critically successful.

In short, a great game is hopefully getting an even better sequel, and a comic we’re eager to read. We can’t wait for Square Enix to announce they expect the comic to sell a million billion copies.
