Unreal’s New Engine Is Stupidly Powerful

Hey, remember how the NextBox or whatever would be six times more powerful? Well, that’s not powerful enough, according to Epic. It needs to be ten times more powerful! Pump out the teraflops!

They recently mentioned the specs their new engine will require, and running at 1080 at 30 frames per second, it’ll need 2.5 teraflops.

To give you an idea of how powerful that is, your 360 can currently crank out about a quarter teraflop, while the PS3 is .14 of a teraflop shy at 2.36 teraflops. As a side note, it’s kind of ridiculous that we’re using devices that even seven years ago would have qualified as research computers to watch Netflix. But anyway.

We’re sure the engine is amazing, but considering that Microsoft is sending every signal in the world that it’s going after the Kinect/casual gaming audience, and not the hardcore shooter audience, we’re left wondering who will even use this engine.

Unless IGN is just making stuff up. But when has THAT ever happened?!
