William Shatner Is Trying To Make A ‘Star Trek’ Musical Happen

If there is any human being who is fully aware that Star Trek and pop music do not mix, it should be William Shatner. But either greed or simple boredom has overwhelmed Sbat er, so he’s trying to get a Star Trek musical off the ground for the 50th anniversary.

The good news, as Shatner notes to The Guardian, is that so far nobody’s bitten. But one fears it’s only a matter of time:

I’ve been actively trying to do a 50th anniversary show … We had a big company say: ‘What about a musical or a music variety show?’ That got some traction – but nothing’s come of it yet.

While some of Star Trek‘s past crew members are more than capable of a song and dance, in most cases, Star Trek‘s brushes with the pop music end of things do not go well. It was a trend that started when Gene Roddenberry wrote lyrics to collect royalties off the theme song and has painfully continued ever since. We’ll be lucky if we get a song as catchy as I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper.

That said, if Shatner put together a musical revue where you performed your classic album Has Been with the original musicians, we’d be there opening night. Seriously, tell us you don’t want to see this cover of Common People live.
