‘Wolverine 3’ Will Show Us Sides Of Professor X ‘We’ve Never Seen Before’

The Wolverine was a fascinating movie for the first two acts; Hugh Jackman and James Mangold riffed on the odd subgenre of the fish-out-of-water tough-guy movie and came up with something compelling. Then the third act with its giant robot and ninja fight happened. It sounds, though, that Wolverine 3 is going to be entirely Jackman’s baby.

Currently on the press tour for Pan, Jackman got into Wolverine 3 a bit with Collider. And it sounds like he’s making the movie he wants to put out, including playing off Patrick Stewart:

Patrick does figure in it that’s for sure. I think it’s a really important relationship but I want to see signs of that quasi-father/son sort of relationship that has not been seen before, and sides of particularly Professor X that have not been seen before. So we have some really, really cool ideas.

This can really only be seen as good news. Stewart has been given some good stuff with the X-Men franchise, but he’s pretty much always had to be the warm, kind, generous father figure while James McAvoy gets to have all the fun. Considering what happens to Wolverine in Days of Future Past, the two obviously have a few issues to work out. Besides, Jackman and Stewart are both excellent actors who need to play off each other more. Hey, maybe Paramount could make a Star Trek: The Next Generation movie where Jackman plays Riker’s somehow more masculine brother?
