The Latest ‘Wonder Woman’ Rumor Has Her Fighting In World War I

It’s pretty common for superhero universes to start in and around World War II, because superhero comics didn’t really begin as such until June, 1938 and the debut of Superman. But Wonder Woman appears to be shaking things up a bit, having Diana arrive in Man’s World during World War I.

You might remember previous rumors had the Wonder Woman movies as a trilogy of period pieces, but according to Heroic Hollywood, which stamps this as a rumor for now, the movie will be split between WWI and the modern day.

This does align with a few things we’ve seen of Diana so far. We know she’s been around for a long, long time; it’s been hinted that she and Bruce Wayne have a certain chemistry, shall we say, and that they’ve known each other well before Batman V. Superman picks up. It would also make sense in the context of the character: Wonder Woman’s entire job is to fight injustice, and violence is not her preferred method of doing that. There’s a reason her primary weapon is a lasso that forces people to tell the truth, and after witnessing World War I, with borders collapsing and millions dead, one can understand her decision that maybe punching wasn’t going to solve any problems more complex than “stopping Doomsday.”

It would also handily dodge coming off like a retread of the Captain America movies, and perhaps set up any sort of Justice Society of America movies DC might be thinking about. Hey, we’d watch a Sandman Mystery Theater HBO series, guys. Think about it.
