Now that the alien… erm, cat is out of the bag, marketing for Fox’s upcoming X-Files event series has expanded greatly since the first teaser aired in July. A brand new trailer in September and an animated reel reminiscent of World War II-era propaganda posters have generated a great deal of excitement for the six-episode run. To top things off, Fox just released a brand new 30-second television spot and a poster silhouetted by a familiar figure and a famous phrase.
The spot replays much of what has come before, along with FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder’s (David Duchovny) musings on the excesses of modern intelligence and spying. Yet it also features brief snippets from the event series’ individual and mythology-based episodes, as well as a rather chilling combination of quotes from Mulder.
“What if our work, the X-Files,” Mulder says on the phone, presumably to FBI Special Agent Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson). “Everything we’ve been led to believe in is a lie?”
Judging by the cut, it would seem that Mulder’s initial question and concluding statement are taken from two different lines of dialogue. After all, TV spots and trailers do this kind of deceptive editing all the time. But what if they are supposed to run together? Makes you think, especially when you consider the new X-Files poster Fox released, which features the Cigarette Smoking Man (William B. Davis) and the tagline “Trust No One” front and center.
The X-Files returns on Sunday, January 24 at 11 p.m. EST, then continues its short run every Monday night beginning January 25 at 8 p.m. EST.
