When it comes to Big K.R.I.T., there’s a certain sense purpose that comes with each song he releases. On “Might Not Be Okay,” he’s joining forces with likeminded artist Kenneth Whalum as they share their pain and frustration with circumstances surrounding the black community right now.

The two collaborated more recently for the track “Away” and the chemistry they held there continues to their latest offering. The piano-driven number features the singer / composer / saxophonist’s soft vocals alongside K.R.I.T.’s attacking approach that puts the powers that be firmly in his sights.

“Police been firin’ and they gon’ keep firin’
The government been lyin’ and they gon’ keep lyin’
Propaganda news channels, that shit is all for show
Camera phone videos is like all we know
Diluting what an eye witness might really say
Because the whole world saw a murder yesterday”

“This is a stand alone song that just came about organically from the both us,” Whalum said via email. “We are both concerned about the realities we are facing as black men. This song was just the expression of those concerns.” Over the years, Whalum has made a name for himself working and touring with the likes of Maxwell, D’Angelo, Robert Glasper and more. Now, he’s stepping out of his supporting role into the spotlight as he works on his solo career and he’s coming with a message behind the music.
