In 2017, Cardi B had the most impressive rookie year of any rapper this side of 50 Cent. She continuously made Billboard chart history with hit after hit after hit, she was nominated for two Grammys, asked to grace the Grammy stage and the Coachella stage and she did all of that before she’s even dropped an album, making her eventual debut LP one of the most anticipated albums of the year. It’s possible Cardi hasn’t really had time to take it all in, as she’s seemingly been rushed from appearance to show to appearance to show from the moment her smash hit “Bodak Yellow” took off, but Tidal was able to track her down and get her thoughts for a short documentary titled I’m Here Muthaf*ckas.
Cardi took the time to reflect at Art Basel, as she performed at a Moschino show and debuted a special collaboration with the company designed by Jeremy Scott. Spliced between performance footage of Cardi ripping through her hits “Bodak Yellow,” “Motorsport” and “No Limit,” Cardi reflects, saying “I have come a long ass way.” Throughout the 7-minute video, Cardi thinks back about getting teased for her colorful wardrobe in high school, her astronomical rise to superstardom, having the same hunger in 2018 and how her rise to fame was “one of the most emotional life stages” she’s been through. Even for an artist who has been as ubiquitous as any other, I’m Here Muthaf*ckas still offers a unique look at rap’s newest superstar, even if it’s brief.
