Odd Future’s Domo Genesis Surprises Fans With A Punchline Packed, Evidence-Produced Mixtape

LA-based, Odd Future-affiliated rapper Domo Genesis has released a new video in support of his bars-heavy, Evidence-produced mixtape, Aren’t U Glad You’re U?, out today via Soundcloud and Datpiff. “Me vs. Me,” Domo’s first single from the eight-song project finds the MellowHigh rapper examining his bad habits and contradictions over a jazz sample-driven beat from Venice MC/producer Evidence of Dilated Peoples.

Aren’t U Glad You’re U? combines the two Angelino talents in a best-of-both-worlds configuration that puts Domo in front as the primary spitter while Evidence mans the boards to create sinister, ’90s-throwback backdrops to complement DG’s reedy, elaborate flow. The MF Doom-influenced, Odd Future MC uses Aren’t U Glad You’re U? to vent his frustrations with Lakers haters (on “Shaq Carried Kobe” featuring veteran rapper Phonte Coleman), fake friends, and Lonzo Ball’s funny-looking jump shot. His production co-pilot Evidence makes a rap appearance on “F*ck A Co-Sign.”

Domo has laid low since the release of his 2016 debut album, Genesis, which featured the rollerskate jam “Dapper” with Anderson .Paak, sneaking in Red Corolla, a ten-song mixtape, in June of last year. While he hasn’t announced any plans for a follow-up as yet, the punchline-packed raps of Aren’t U Glad are sure to provide his fans with plenty of replay value as they decipher his intricate wordplay. It’s a perfect offering for listeners looking for an alternative to the melodic, trap-heavy options on tap in today’s rap game, but still sounds fresh enough to stand alongside them without sounding stodgy or out-of-touch.
