There comes a time when a person has just had enough and they decide to do something about it. T.I.–or TIP–is at that point. Whether it’s black men being persecuted, murdered in the streets, or just the living conditions of his people, he’s got a message in “We Will Not” that needs to be heard and felt.
“No we will not stand here in silence
While they take the lives of our brothers and sisters and partna
We will not turn a blind eye to the murder with no repercussions
No we will not
We will not live on our knees, we will die on our feet
This ain’t no lie that I speak
All you youngin’s out here in the streets only want to shoot people who look like you
You can stay home, you too weak
Oh no, we will not go and repeat the mistakes of the past
Ignorin’ the snakes in the grass”
This is a call to arms but not those that come with a trigger. TIP is demanding his brothers and sisters use their heads and demand more. Not just from those in power but from ourselves. He’s walking the fine line of communicating for his community and the external factors that plague it, but the internal factors as well.
Any time a rapper who’s made their money on promoting street life attempts to make a song denouncing those same things, there can be a tendency to tune them out. Don’t do that with this one. Aside from being a relevant message, it’s a good joint with him showing that his flow is still on point and he hasn’t lost his penchant for preaching.
