Tiffany Haddish Talks Hollywood Sexual Assault To Make Her First ‘SNL’ Monologue A Memorable One

Tiffany Haddish opened Saturday Night Live strong with a monologue hitting on everything from her deceptively low bank account to her youth in the foster system to the sexual assault allegations in Hollywood.

Haddish told the audience that long before her star-making turn in Girls Trip, she grew up in foster care, offering thanks to “anyone who paid taxes between 1990 and 1999, because if you wouldn’t have paid your taxes, I wouldn’t be standing right here today so thank you.” She also described her personal history with the show:

“I lived in a lot of group homes and my favorite show growing up was SNL, that’s my favorite show, and you have no idea how difficult it is to get a bunch of black and hispanic kids to watch SNL over In Living Color. Trying to convince them Dana Carvey is as funny as Damon Wayans was a problem. I got stabbed twice y’all, in a bunk bed.”

She also took a moment to address the rampant sexual harassment allegations in the news, offering a helpful “Tiff Tip.”

“If you got your thing-thing out and she’s got all her clothes on, you’re wrong.”

Haddish is the first black female comedian to host the show in 43 years, and only the 12th black woman to host. The only other African-American women to host SNL include Octavia Spencer, Kerry Washington, Taraji P. Henson, Gabourey Sidibe, Rosario Dawson, Janet Jackson, Queen Latifah, Halle Berry, Cicely Tyson, Maya Rudolph and Oprah Winfrey. That’s still twice as many as black women to be regular cast members: only six in the show’s entire history, including Yvonne Hudson, Danitra Vance, Ellen Cleghorne, Maya Rudolph, Sasheer Zamata and Leslie Jones.

Haddish will be the 12th black woman to host the show, preceded by Octavia Spencer, Kerry Washington, Taraji P. Henson, Gabourey Sidibe, Rosario Dawson, Janet Jackson, Haddish’s “Girls Trip” co-star Queen Latifah, Halle Berry, Cicely Tyson, former SNL cast member Maya Rudolph and, naturally, Oprah Winfrey.
