If you ever wondered if hip-hop was ready for a mainstream openly gay rapper, look no further than Young M.A. The 24-year-old Brooklynite is rap’s current favorite thanks to her infectious “OOOUUU” single, legit #barz and overall charisma, all qualities needed to make a rap star. On top of getting many co-signs from music’s elite, including Beyonce herself, M.A. was recently featured in a Beats By Dre commercial that also starred Nicki Minaj, Pharrell Williams, and Amber Rose, just to name a few. In short, the girl’s going places!

While comfortable in her skin now, it wasn’t always that easy. “Sometimes I question why I was born this way. I never wanted to wear skirts or shoes, makeup, nails, dresses, or even wear my hair a certain way,” Elle‘s recent interview with Young M.A. highlights. “I always wanted to wear sneakers, stud earrings, hair in a ponytail, and play with the boys. I never wanted to be a cheerleader, I wanted to play football. I always wanted to be the boy doll. I never understood it until I got older and realized this is just who I was meant to be and I am proud of who I am.”

Young M.A. is so confident in who she is now that she even declined an opportunity to appear on Empire as Freeda Gatz, the lip gloss-wearing, makeup-donning female battle rapper on the hit series. Pretty commendable when you think that even Da Brat went fem for a check that one time.
