First up in this week”s 10 Stories You Might Have Missed: Adam Sandler”s newest comedy is already offending people, and it hasn”t even finished filming yet.
Sandler”s Netflix-produced satirical Western, “The Ridiculous Six” (yes, the title”s a nod to “The Magnificent Seven”) was shooting in New Mexico when about a dozen Native American actors reportedly walked off set because the film insults their culture.
The actors, most of whom were from the Navajo Nation, said the script for “The Ridiculous Six” insulted Apache women and elders.
“The examples of disrespect included Native women”s names such as Beaver”s Breath and No Bra, an actress portraying an Apache woman squatting and urinating while smoking a peace pipe, and feathers inappropriately positioned on a teepee,” Indian Country Today Media Network reported.
The actors expressed disappointment they were asked to portray an inaccurate and disrespectful depiction of Apache people after producers had reassured them that they had hired a cultural consultant and that the film would have a tasteful representation of Native Americans.
