133 days until Star Wars: SHATTERED EMPIRE #1 begins to mend race and gender homogeny

For as long as Star Wars has existed, it has been a very Skywalker-centric franchise. Whether focusing on Anakin or Luke, audiences have viewed the protracted war between the Republic and the Empire through the lens of boys from Tatooine.

That”s been changing lately. From “Star Wars Rebels” to novels like “Dark Disciple” and “Tarkin,” the galaxy is expanding. This September, another hero takes the spotlight in JOURNEY TO STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS – SHATTERED EMPIRE #1 (good gravy that”s a mouthful of title!).

From the press release:

follow Shara Bey, an A-Wing pilot in the Rebel Fleet in the days following the Battle of Endor. Though their super weapon has been destroyed, Shara will discover that just how dangerous and unpredictable a shattered Empire can be! Don”t miss the explosive first issue as Marvel takes a deeper look into a part of the Star Wars universe yet unexplored.

Interestingly, Marvel and Lucasfilm are making it a point to right the ship – so to speak – when it comes to representation of humans in the Star Wars universe. No longer are Princess Leia and Mon Mothma the lone women in the galaxy. No longer can only one Person of Color exist at any given time. From lead characters to background fillers, the Rebel Alliance and the Empire are no longer exclusively populated by white dudes!
