At long last: A “Jem and the Holograms” live-action movie is coming to the big-screen.
Director Jon M. Chu (“Justin Bieber's Believe,” “G.I. Joe: Retaliation”) has announced in a new YouTube video that he'll be helming a feature-length adaptation of the 1980s animated series – and what's more, he and his producers want you to be the star.
“We are looking for the most talented girls and boys in the world to be in our movie,” says producer/music mogul Scooter Braun in the clip. “Triple threats. Singing. Dancing. Acting. We want you to be our movie star.”
In addition to the open casting process (you can submit an audition video to JemtheMovie.com), Chu, Braun and producer Jason Blum are also asking fans of the original series to post videos and images to the film's official Tumblr to express what they love most about the original show. “Jem and the Holograms” ran from 1985-1988 in first-run syndication. The plot revolved around the adventures of music company owner Jerrica Benton and her musical alter-ego Jem, who fronted a rock band called the Holograms. Produced by toymaker Hasbro, the franchise also included a line of dolls.
