Aaron Eckhart is expected to join Johnny Depp and Amber Heard in the love triangle at the heart of “Rum Diary.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Eckhart is in negotiations to co-star in Bruce Robinson’s adaptation of the Hunter S. Thompson novel, while Oscar nominee Richard Jenkins has signed on for supporting role.
The plot focuses on Paul Kemp (Depp), a boozy journalist cutting a swath across 1950s Puerto Rico. Eckhart would play Sanderson, a wealthy island landowner. Both men are vying for the affection of Chenault, the young woman played by the recently cast Amber Heard.
The trade paper says Jenkins will play Lotterman, publish of the newspaper employing Kemp.
Eckhart co-starred as Harvey “Two-Face” Dent in this summer’s smash “The Dark Knight.” The “Thank You For Smoking” star has “Traveling” and “Battle: Los Angeles” on tap.
Jenkins’ 2008 credits include the Coen Brothers’ “Burn After Reading” and an Oscar nominated turn in “The Visitor.” He recently signed on to co-star in “Cabin in the Woods,” from the script by Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard.
