‘Angels’ wrestles with its ‘Demons’ at Friday box office

God giveth and god taketh away.  That may be the lesson learned for director Ron Howard and producer Brian Glazer after this weekend’s disappointing take for “Angels & Demons.”

The second installment in what was expected to be a Robert Langdon franchise after the blockbuster success of “The Da Vinci Code,” the Vatican set thriller did not deliver the same punch as the first adaptation of Dan Brown’s popular novels.  As tracking predicted, “Angels” opened to only $16.5 million on Friday and, if lucky, could hit between $45-50 million for the weekend.  While Sony Pictures was not expecting to match “Da Vinci’s” domestic opener of $77 million three years ago, this is not a positive result for the expensive and much-hyped flick.  The studio will no doubt hope that as with “Da Vinci,” “Angels” over performs overseas.  “Da Vinci” cumed a massive $540 outside the U.S. alone and if “Angels” can reach half that, Sony should break even on the picture.

Coming in second and quickly quieting all naysayers is the season’s first true hit, “Star Trek.”  The J.J. Abrams reboot grossed $11.8 million on Friday and is expected to cume between $35-38 million in its second weekend.  Already at $116 million in only ten days, the picture should easily surpass $200 million at this point.  The question is how high can it go with “Terminator: Salvation” opening this week?

Third place went to “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” which grossed $4.2 million for a new cume of $140 million.  Fox’s new franchise is clearly slowing down and should finish with $12 million and around $148 million after the weekend.  Breaking the $200 million plateau looks unlikely at this point.

The only other noteworthy opener was the indie comedy “Management” starring Jennifer Anniston with a tepid $110,000 from 212 theaters.  Distributor Samuel Goldwyn must be thrilled they invested in this one, especially after how little Aniston worked to promote the flick.
