ANAHEIM – A large contingent of the “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” team traveled to the D23 Expo Saturday to preview the only “Avengers” film arriving in theaters next year. The Star-Spangled Soldier himself, Chris Evans, was in attendance, as was Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson, aka the Falcon), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes, aka The Winter Soldier) and directors Anthony and Joe Russo. The former was unavailable to speak, but the rest of the crew had some interesting things to say about the thriller which just wrapped shooting a little over a week ago.
Mackie, who was hoping to join the Marvel Universe for some time, admits there is no tease of his character’s classic costume which dates back to the 1970’s, but boy did he want those spandex pants. He also leaves the door open for Wilson to join his buddy Cap in The Avengers (The Falcon is a member in the comic books) and just why there is no other superhero like The Falcon.
The Russo brothers talk about their thoughts upon watching an assembly cut of the film, the ’70s conspiracy theory tone of the picture and creating a bridge to a third “Captain America” film (sort of).
Stan, whose character seemingly died in “The First Avenger,” reveals he didn’t really think he’d be back for the sequel until just a year ago. Moreover, anyone thinking there will be a major connection between Winter Soldier and Black Widow (as in the comics) may be a tad disappointed.
