Artist Alley: The best comic covers I saw this week – Infinity Gauntlet, Mad Max, and more

Every week, smorgasbord of beautiful comic book cover art is released into the world. Each Thursday, I highlight a handful of my favorites. Come for the subjective taste in art, stay for the inevitable debate on the merits of my taste!

Today we have covers by Francesco Francavilla, Dan Panosian, E.M. Gist, Andrew Losq, Dustin Weaver, and Stjepan Sejic.

#1: MAD MAX: FURY ROAD – INSPIRED ARTISTS DELUXE EDITION – VERTIGO COMICS
Everything from the dusty palette to the giant speakers on whatever behemoth is emerging from the distance just reminds me how awesome this movie looks.

Commentary by George Miller. Cover by Unknown. On sale May 6.

#2: ARCHIE VS. PREDATOR #1 – ARCHIE COMICS via IGN
Archie has a history of insane cross-overs, but I”m a particular fan of using the art styling of the AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE covers.

Written by Alex de Campi. Cover by Francesco Francavilla. On sale April 15.

#3: BATMAN: ARKHAM KNIGHT #4 – DC COMICS
Yay dynamic art! Yay for a mysterious Batmobile that appear to be driving itself! Yay for Batman”s unamused facial reaction to this!

Written by Peter J. Tomasi. Cover by Dan Panosian. On sale May 13.

#4: THE STRAIN: THE NIGHT ETERNAL #7 – DARK HORSE COMICS
There”s a lot going on here. The motorcycle helmet, the reflection in said helmet of a person wielding a sword, the chains, the claws, the tongue, the blood. I don”t know exactly what story the art is telling, but it makes me want to know more.

Written by David Lapham. Cover by E.M. Gist. On sale March 18.

#5: ARTFUL DAGGERS #17 – MONKEYBRAIN COMICS
Anything that reminds me of “Princess Mononoke,” automatically earns a spot on this list. It”s the rules.

Written by Adam P. Knave and Sean E. Williams. Cover by Andrew Losq. On sale now.

#6: INFINITY GAUNTLET #1
I am fascinated by everything here. The female lead, a family of superheroes, a CHILD in a Nova Corps uniform. Not to mention the more mechanical looking gauntlet (that is missing some stones) and Star-Lord”s new look.

Written by Gerry Duggan and Dustin Weaver. Cover by Dustin Weaver. On sale this May.

#7: RAT QUEENS #11
Dwarves women with beards needs to be more prevalent in high fantasy. So does putting lipstick on a university statue. A+ all around.

Written by Kurtis J. Wiebe. Cover by Stjepan Sejic. On sale May 6.
