Box office: ‘Fault in Our Stars’ rules Friday on its way to huge $50 million opening

“The Fault in Our Stars” is having a great weekend.

Overwhelmingly powered by young female viewers, the tearjerking drama earned a massive $26.1 million at the box office on Friday night, and is on track to rake in more than $50 million for the weekend.

The film, based on John Green's YA bestseller, stars Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort.

Budgeted at just $12 million, “Stars” is dominating the weekend's other wide opener, the Tom Cruise sci-fi film “Edge of Tomorrow,” which earned $10.6 million for second place.

The Doug Liman-directed film, which also stars Emily Blunt and Bill Paxton, will likely earn around $30 million for the weekend, which is higher than initial expectations, is still a disappointment for Cruise. It will have to make up a lot of ground overseas in order to make up for its reported $175 million price tag.

In third place, Angelina Jolie helped “Maleficent” earn another $10.1 million and crossed the magic $100 million mark domestically.

“X-Men: Days of Future Past” picked up another $4.5 million for fourth place. Among the biggest hits so far this year, its domestic total stands at $178.9 million.

It stars Halle Berry, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence and Hugh Jackman.

“A Million Ways to Die in the West,” Seth MacFarlane's comic western co-starring Charlize Theron, is still struggling. It roped in $2.2 million on Friday, bringing its total to a flat $25.1 million.
