Box Office: ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ isn’t fading fast enough to relinquish no. 1

Three new movies arrived in theaters on Friday.  Mr. Grey easily dismissed them.

“Fifty Shades of Grey” remained at no. 1 earning another $8 million for a stellar $114.9 million in just eight days.  While the Universal Pictures release is slowing down considerably it should still pull in somewhere between $20-25 million for the three-day.

“Kingsman: The Secret Service” remained in second place with $5.3 million for $54.8 million so far.

CBS Films' “The Duff” was the big surprise in third taking in $4.2 million for what could be a $12-13 million weekend. The teen comedy cost a relatively modest $8.5 million to make.

In fourth place,”The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water” continued to feast on family audiences earning another $4 million for $113.6 million to date.

Walt Disney Studios' “McFarland, USA” earned $3.6 million and is expected to take in $10 million by end of day Sunday.  With a reported $17 million production budget “McFarland” will need top hope its A Cinemascore results in strong word of mouth.

Coming in dramatically under pre-release expectations was “Hot Tub Time Machine 2.” The Paramount Pictures and MGM release earned only $2.3 million for what should be a $6-7 million three-day take at best.
