Three weekends and three no. 1 finishes. It's been quite a run at the box office for “Furious 7” and it isn't over yet. The Universal Pictures blockbuster took in an estimated $29 million this weekend for $294.4 million to date. Globally, James Wan's thriller has taken in an incredible $1.15 billion. “Furious 7” now ranks as the no. 7 highest grossing movie worldwide ahead of “Transformers: Dark of the Moon's” $1.152 billion tally and behind “Iron Man 3's” $1.215 billion.
Debuting at no. 2 was “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2.” The Sony Pictures comedy grossed $24 million over the three-day frame which was impressive considering the universally negative reviews and B- Cinemascore grade (“Blart” has a rare 0% on Rotten Tomatoes and 39 grade on Metacritic). Still, at a budget of just $30 million, “Paul Blart 2” has an excellent chance of eventually segueing into the black.
Universal Pictures also commanded the third slot with the horror flick “Unfriended.” The social media themed thriller earned $16 million and with a reported $1 million production budget is already a cash cow for the studio.
DreamWorks Animation's “Home” secured the fourth spot with another $10 million and $142.6 million to date. The 20th Century Fox release has earned $269.9 million worldwide so far.
“The Longest Ride” dropped all the way to fifth with another $6.8 million and $23.5 million to date.
Among other new releases, “Monkey Kingdom” earned $4.7 million, “True Story” took in $1.9 million from just 831 theaters and “Child 44” found a disappointing $600,000 from 510 theaters.
New releases on Friday include “The Age of Adeline” and “Little Boy.”
