The horror: ‘Ouija’ scares up box office win over ‘Nightcrawler’ in Monday switcheroo

It was a narrow win, but “Ouija” has officially stolen the weekend box office crown from “Nightcrawler.”

In a Monday morning switcheroo, the teen spookfest triumphed over Dan Gilroy's critically-acclaimed thriller “Nightcrawler” starring Jake Gyllenhaal, which looked to have squeaked out a win in early estimates. That puts the horror flick at No. 1 for the second weekend in a row with $10.7 million, despite a pitiful 8% “Rotten” score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The film has now grossed over $34 million in its first ten days.

“Nightcrawler”, meanwhile, finished the weekend at No. 2 with $10.4 million, nearly $500,000 less than its original estimate of $10.909 million. The film has received extremely positive critical notices with a “Fresh” rating of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, so it could benefit from positive word of mouth over the coming weeks.
