Hulu is getting into the Marvel business: The streaming platform is developing an adaptation of Marvel title Runaways, the fan-favorite comic series created by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona, Deadline first reported.
Runaways is in development at Hulu but, contrary to reports elsewhere, does not yet have a series order, a source tells HitFix.
Set to serve as showrunners are Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, whose credits include Gossip Girl and The O.C. – so both have had successes in the realm of TV about teens. Runaways is about a group of superpowered teens who learn that their parents are part of an evil crime organization.
Shortly after the news broke, Schwartz tweeted out his enthusiasm to be aboard the Vaughan-based project.

Runaways was previously in development as a feature film at Marvel Studios, back in 2008, following the book“s first issue hitting comic book store shelves in 2003.
Now, the Vaughan series that I am more eager to see realized onscreen is Y: The Last Man, but having shows based on two BKV books – TV shows, not movies, where these complex stories have time to develop – is great news. (Y is in the works at FX.) Runaways didn”t get quite the proper conclusion Y: The Last Man did, since Runaways kept getting continued past the six issues Vaughan originally intended it to be. So the tale of teen superheroes isn”t so much part of the welcome trend observed by my colleague Drew McWeeny: TV networks taking on comic books with a complete story ready to be turned into a hopefully long-lasting but not drawn-out TV series. But here”s hoping that Hulu does right by Runaways and gives it a solid series.
