Bryan Singer closes deal to direct ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’

Good news for “X-Men: Days of Future Past” fans: Bryan Singer is officially returning to helm the next movie in the long-running franchise.

Though it was previously rumored, the filmmaker has now closed a deal with Fox to direct “X-Men: Apocalypse,” Deadline has confirmed. This will be Singer's fourth “X-Men” film 2000's “X-Men,” 2003's “X2” and this year's “DOFP.” The script is again being written by Simon Kinberg from a story by Singer and “X2” scribes Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris.

Set a decade after the last installment, “X-Men: Apocalypse” will see the titular team of mutants going up against a powerful new enemy unleashed by the history-altering events of “Days of Future Past.” The returning cast includes James McAvoy (Charles Xavier), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique) and Nicholas Hoult (Beast). Production is slated to begin early next year for release on May 27, 2016.

It's no surprise Fox wanted Singer back: “X-Men: Days of Future Past” grossed a franchise-high $745 million worldwide.
