“Captain Planet and the Planeteers” may be hitting a silver-screen near you in the not-too-distant future.
Sony is in final negotiations to acquire the rights to the environmentally-themed cartoon series for a planned movie adaptation, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The show, which originally aired from 1990-1992 on TBS, followed a group of teenagers from all corners of the globe who were granted superpowers by the earth spirit Gaia in order to protect the planet from polluters. The teens were helped along in their various adventures by Captain Planet, a powerful superhero who could be summoned by the Planeteers when they were faced with a particularly difficult challenge.
This current iteration of the project, which is being produced by Don Murphy (“Transformers”) and Mark Gordon (“Source Code,” “2012”), was first reported on nearly two years ago as a live-action version of the material, though it remains to be seen whether Sony plans to go the live-action or animation route.. A film adaptation of the series had been attempted several times previously, but all of those efforts failed to get past the scripting stage.
“Captain Planet and the Planeteers” was followed by a sequel series entitled “The New Adventures of Captain Planet,” which ran from 1993-1996. Both shows continue to air in syndication.
