After mixed and underrated results for the contemporary drama “The Soloist,” acclaimed filmmaker Joe Wright is returning to the safe confines of period films.  The director of “Pride & Prejudice” and “Atonement” has been developing an adaptation of Alex von Tunzelmann’s “Indian Summer,” about the last days of British colonial rule in India in 1947.  Now, Variety reports Wright has found his leading lady in Cate Blanchett.

The Oscar-winner will play Lady Edwina Mountbatten in an unrequited love story between an English noble woman and Jawaharial Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India.

Blanchett is currently portraying Maid Marian in Ridley Scott’s reinterpretation of “Robin Hood.”

Production on “Summer” is expected to begin next year.
