CBS embarks on ‘The Amazing Race 15’

CBS has picked up at least one additional installment of “The Amazing Race.”

The news actually broke this morning on “Amazing Race” host Phil Keoghan’s Twitter feed, when he posted, “Great news. Just got the call from the Network. CBS has ordered another season of ‘The Amazing Race.'”

Indeed, CBS has set the 15th installment of the reality Emmy juggernaut — six straight Outstanding Reality-Competition Program wins and counting — for the 2009-10 season. The order isn’t exactly a surprise, since Keoghan is in the midst of a 40-day, 3,500 mile bike ride across America, appearing an open casting calls for the show.

While CBS’ higher rated “Survivor” has settled into a steady pattern of two installments per television season, “The Amazing Race” has had a more erratic schedule. While this season had two “Race” runs, the 2007-08 season only had a single Race, which aired between November and January. In addition, the show’s fourth and fifth installments aired out-of-season in the summers of 2003 and 2004.

“The Amazing Race 14” has been hailed as a return-to-form for the globe-trotting series and it has averaged 10.94 million viewers per week since it premiered in February.

This “Amazing Race” season will have its finale on Sunday, May 10.

CBS is currently taking applications for “The Amazing Race” on the show’s official website and open calls — featuring Keoghan, assuming his cycling goes as planned — are scheduled for Chicago (April 24), Pittsburgh (May 1) and New York (May 8).
