CBS has renewed the summer favorite “Big Brother” for a 14th installment to premiere in 2012.
This news isn’t exactly surprising, given that CBS was running, “If you think you have what it takes to be on ‘Big Brother’…” advertisements during last week’s episodes. But now it’s official.
The renewal also wasn’t exactly surprising, given that “Big Brother” has been having a summer ratings renaissance in its 13th season. For the summer (factoring in DVRed viewership and whatnot), CBS says that “Big Brother” is averaging 8.11 million viewers and a 3.1 rating among adults 18-49, its biggest audience and key demo ratings since 2004.
In fact, CBS boasts that all things “Big Brother” have been up this summer, including 8 percent audience growth for Showtime 2’s “Big Brother: After Dark” and 18 percent growth for the network’s official “Big Brother” website.
“Big Brother” premiered in 2000 and has been a steady regular performer for CBS with three weekly airings during the sluggish summer months. If the season/year count feels off to you, CBS also got a spring run out of “Big Brother” back in 2008 as filler during and after the writers strike, though nobody likes to acknowledge that season.
“Big Brother” will wrap up Season 13 on Wednesday (September 14) with a 90 minute episode airing at 9:30 p.m. after the premiere of “Survivor: South Pacific.” Host Julie Chen will announce whether the winner of this season’s $500,000 prize is Porsche, Adam or Rachel. It will be exciting.
