Screen Gems is seeing dollar signs by recruiting pop’s biggest divas to star in their savvily marketed pictures.  First, they brought on Golden Globe acting nominee Beyonce Knowles (how soon we forget) for last month’s hit thriller “Obsessed” and now they have convinced Christina Aguilera to make her big screen debut in “Burlesque.”

According to Variety, the contemporary musical, a first for a division better known for its cheap thrillers, will find Aguilera playing a small town girl who moves to Los Angeles with dreams of hitting it big.  She finds success in a neo-burlesque club that seems inspired by Bob Fosse’s “Cabaret.”

Steve Antin, a former actor and screenwriter who developed “Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious” will make his feature film directing debut.  Not necessarily the safest or most experienced hands for Aguilera to trust as she begins her film career, but it’ll do.

Unclear is whether Aguilera will contribute any original songs to the production or if any other well known musical stars will join the cinematic revue.

Aguilera has sold over 25 million albums, but her last single, “Keeps Getting Better” crashed after an impressive #7 debut on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.  Her next album is expected this summer.

Screen Gems hopes she’ll follow a promo tour for the new album by shooting “Burlesque” late this year.
