Comedy Central has ordered a second season of “Important Things with Demetri Martin,” holding onto a potentially burgeoning star asset.

The network announcement for the “Important Things” renewal says that the show’s second season will return in the first quarter of 2010.

“Thanks to Comedy Central for extending the show’s importance,” says Martin in a network statement.

By the time the second season of “Important Things” launches, Martin will have appeared in Ang Lee’s late-summer comedy “Taking Woodstock” in his biggest star turn to date. He’s also expected to have appeared opposite Brad Pitt in Steven Soderbergh’s adaptation of “Moneyball.” High profile exposure like that has the potential to boost ratings, not that “Important Things” struggled to find an audience.

In its first season, “Important Things with Demetri Martin” averaged 2.3 million viewers and regularly won its timeslot among men 18-24 and men 18-34. The show’s February 11 premiere drew 2.8 million viewers, becoming Comedy Central’s most-watched series premiere since “Chappelle’s Show” in 2003.

“The uniquely creative Demetri Martin brought a great new perspective to the network, striking a chord with our viewers and becoming an immediate sensation, especially among our core young men and Gen Y,” says Lauren Corrao, president of original programming for Comedy Central. “His talent is undeniable and we are looking forward to more important things from Demetri in the upcoming season.”
