Is it time for round two of Katie Holmes comeback?  Or is it three?  This writer keeps loosing track.

Holmes movie career came to a screeching halt after her shotgun marriage to Tom Cruise around the same time as “Batman Begins” in 2005.  After attempting a comeback in the disastrous comedy “Mad Money,” which got Overture Films off to a rocky start, Holmes went to Broadway in a revival of Arthur Miller’s “All My Sons” which earned her mixed reviews.  Her next two choices may be significantly more impactful.

Recently, Holmes completed the indie comedy “The Extra Man” with John C. Reilly, Kevin Kline and Paul Dano.  Not bad company to share screen time with.   Now, Variety reports Holmes will star in the new thriller “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” for producer Guillermo del Toro (yes, that Guillermo del Toro) and newbie director Troy Nixey.

Written by del Toro and Matthew Robbins, “Dark” is based on a 1970s TV movie about a young girl who moves in with her father and girlfriend only to discover they are sharing a home with devilish creatures.   The trade did not speculate on which character Holmes was playing in the feature, but we’ll assume the girlfriend.

One of Miramax’s first forways into genre films since the Weinsteins left, “Dark” will open with a “Guillermo del Toro Presentation” title card.

The picture is expected to begin production in Melbourne, Australia later this summer.
