‘Supergirl’s’ Melissa Benoist calls Superman’s arrival a ‘necessary relationship to explore’

Supergirl Season 2 premieres tonight on its new home, The CW. Along with Melissa Benoist and the rest of the original cast, Tyler Hoechlin will be joining to guest star as Superman. But don't worry, that doesn't mean the Girl of Steel is playing second fiddle.

Hoechlin recently put to rest the notion that his version of Superman would be dark and brooding, but those concerns aside, fans have wondered whether Superman should have a role on Supergirl at all. I wondered recently whether or not his arrival was happening too late.

But Revelist spoke with Benoist ahead of the premiere to address those worried Superman might dominate the story.

“I wasn”t worried about it, to be honest. I thought it was kind of the natural progression of our story,” she told Revelist during a press conference call to discuss Season 2. “We spent last season really solidifying how [Kara] wanted to approach being Supergirl and being the hero, and he”s her only family member, and I think that”s kind of a necessary relationship to explore for both characters.”

It's certainly interesting to see how the rest of the characters on the show respond to Clark/Superman in their midst, but how did Benoist view the interactions?

“It really rewarded us as a cast, I believe, because you not only get to see how amazing the relationship between Clark and Kara is – or should I say Kal-El? – but you see how he has relationships with everyone on the show,” she said. “He has a history with a lot of them and some of them he meets for the first time, and it”s hilarious, like Winn, but I think it”s only going to reap benefits. And Tyler Hoechlin is the man to do it. He”s perfect in the role.”

Here's a scene from tonight's episode (which we previously saw here).
