Coming in at the last minute to save the day, Variety reports Emma Stone will play the lead role in the new Sony Pictures comedy “Easy A.”

Expected to begin shooting soon, the picture is a retelling of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Scarlet Letter,” but set in a contemporary high school setting.  This version centers on a student (Stone) who sees her life paralleling Hawthorne’s classic heroine Hester Prynee after she pretends to be the school slut  hoping the notoriety will make her more popular.  “Fired Up’s” Will Gluck will direct.

Stone has become something of a Sony Pictures girl after starring in “Superbad,” “The House Bunny” and the horror/comedy “Zombieland,” which is currently in production.  “Easy” will be her fifth flick for the company, but she has branched out.  She recently completed the indie “Paper Man” with Ryan Reynolds, Lisa Kudrow and Kieran Culkin.  She’ll return to the big screen in May with the Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner romantic comedy “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past.”
