Watch: ‘Fast and Furious 7’ director James Wan says he’ll make the franchise ‘terrifying’

Is there room for scares in the “Fast and Furious” franchise? James Wan certainly thinks so.

Sitting down with the horror auteur (alongside his creative partner Leigh Whannell) to talk about his upcoming sequel “Insidious: Chapter 2” over the weekend, I couldn’t help but ask what unique qualities he plans on bringing to his next directing assignment: the big-budget franchise entry “Fast and Furious 7.” Given Wan’s background as the director of such fright films as “Saw” and “The Conjuring,” his answer may not surprise you.

“One of the things I definitely wanna do is be mindful of how much people love the world, and so I wanna honor the world,” he began. “But at the same time, I wanna see if I can bring something that’s more ‘me’ to it. I’m such a big fan of suspense, thrillers and stuff like that, so I wanna see if I can bring some of that to this, you know? Tension and stuff like that. I want my set pieces to be kind of terrifying. You know, like, ‘is that guy gonna die? Is that gonna happen?’ That kind of stuff. I want you to feel that when you’re watching.”

All of that said, I think it’s fair to say he’ll be laying off the ghosts and demons this time around.

“Fast and Furious 7” is slated for release on July 11, 2014.
