After a one-season apprenticeship on “Damages,” Timothy Olyphant may be ready to lead his own FX drama.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Olyphant will topline an untitled drama based on the Elmore Leonard short story “Fire in the Hole.”

Olyphant’s casting kick-starts a pilot that had been placed on hold earlier this month as producers struggled to find the right leading man.

The “Deadwood” star will play U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, who returns to his coal-mining hometown, where he has to balance his time as a no-nonsense lawman with his ex-wife and aging father

The pilot was written by Graham Yost (“Boomtown”) and will be helmed by Michael Dinner, who directed multiple episodes of TV’s last Elmore Leonard adaptation, ABC’s “Karen Sisco.”

The untitled Leonard drama’s competition for FX scheduling space will be the boxing drama “Lights Out,” which stars Holt McCallany and Melora Hardin.

Olyphant was most recently seen as Wes Krulik on the second season of FX’s “Damages.” His movie credits include “Hitman,” “Live Free or Die Hard” and “The Girl Next Door.”
